THE OLYMPIAN SPIRIT

It has been a great opportunity, that I have had in the past week, to be a “part” of the Olympic journey thru the lens of my TV. I am sure anyone who has been watching this superlative, ongoing, set of day by day adventure stories will agree that it is more than captivating. These athletes hold the hopes and dreams of millions of people across the world, whom we watch instant by instant. They come to their moment of glory or else they meet one of being overpowered by a contestant, who perhaps has won by a mere 10th of a second. Over and over again, by trials, to semi-finals, to finals. GOLD-SILVER-BRONZE. We hold these individuals as precious metals. However, do we see them for who I believe they truly are? All of them – winners and losers.

It appears that these athletes are absolutely a group of soulful individuals who have the capacity to LIVE IN THE MOMENT, before during and after their events. Their connection with the life force is an awe inspiring phenomena. You sense in their faces, their bodies not only the challenges that have been met on a daily basis for most of their lives, but a deep awareness of Spirit. This connection with spirit appears to bring them to what we are ALL looking for – groundedness, balance, unending courage, belief and faith in the greater self, the freedom to go beyond what they have never tried before and do it in THAT MOMENT. How many times have we seen a Olympian who was defeated temporarily -instantly regain their spirit and complete the performance, the race; supporting themselves towards the best possible outcome?

We all have this same opportunity in our own lives, although the medals may or may not be there. To take the time in our days to be still, listen, contemplate, relax in our bodies and connect to Spirit. This engenders the life force within us to replenish and sustain us through our very difficult daily challenges. It enables us to stay “right there” with ourselves as we stumble, slide out of control or miss the score. We can move right into the next moment of our own very special lives, without that sense of defeat, of failure. Such is the gift – of continuity – of purpose – of spirit.
